What Does Eco-friendly Mean?

Hey Merfolks!

We hear so many terms regarding being eco-friendly, but do we know what they actually mean? Understanding the basic concept of these terms, will help you make better decisions when it comes to living green.

Here are some of the common terms we hear day-to-day :

Eco-friendly is a broad term that means not harmful to the environment. It’s applied to everything from cleaning products to clothing.

Reuse is the action or practice of using an item, whether for its original purpose (conventional reuse) or to fulfill a different function (creative reuse or repurposing).

Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects.

Compost is a mixture of ingredients used to fertilize and improve the soil. It is commonly prepared by decomposing plant and food waste and recycling organic materials. The resulting mixture is rich in plant nutrients and beneficial organisms, such as worms and fungal mycelium. Compost improves soil fertility in gardens, landscaping, horticulture, urban agriculture, and organic farming, reducing dependency on commercial chemical fertilizers.

Biodegradation is the breakdown of organic matter by microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi. It is generally assumed to be a natural process, which differentiates it from composting. Composting is a human-driven process in which biodegradation occurs under a specific set of circumstances.

Low impact means reducing the impact on the environment. It’s similar to eco-friendly, but with a bigger emphasis on cutting down use of nature’s resources.

Zero waste is all about creating as little trash as possible. While the ultimate goal is–you guessed it–zero waste, our current economy and capabilities puts it just out of reach.

Sustainable describes a system of balance, where today’s behaviors don’t negatively affect society’s future quality of life. Think sustainable farming, sustainable tourism, and other practices that ensure we preserve natural resources for years to come. Also known as Eco-living, Green-living and Sustainable-living.
