No Damsel in Distress

Since the past years, we have been blessed with many women-centric films, which were much long due. Whether it maybe a young woman discovering herself, or a mother seeking vengeance, these movies are an inspiration and representation that we needed. Below are some of my favourite movies which feature women in power.

Jo March in 'Little Women'

Kahaani (2012)

It's been a decade since this movie released. This movie had a plot twist that no one saw coming. Don't underestimate a woman on a mission, even if she's pregnant.

English Vinglish (2012)

Shashi is a small entrepreneur who makes delicious snacks. She flies to New York City to attend her niece’s wedding. She enrolls in an English-speaking course, to stop her husband Satish and daughter Sapna from mocking her lack of English skills. Her attempt to learn the language helps her rediscover herself and reassert her value as a mother and a wife.

Maleficent (2014)

One of the Disney's classic villains, turned into a hero. The writers did a amazing job uncovering the pain and betrayal maleficent felt. We are brought to understand the root of her actions.

Mardaani (2014)

The plot-twist ending I did not see coming. Rani Mukherjee's character is an inspiration for all women to be brave and courageous. To stand up for justice, to do right, even if many forces stand against you.

To All The Boys (2018)

Lara Jean is the most I relate to on this list. She learned form her mistakes & grew as an individual. She overcame her fears & shared her true feelings. Her sisters - Margot & Kitty too, are an inspiration.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (2019)

A little different & a sweet Rom-Com. Love is Love, no matter skin, creed or gender. Not all will accept you, but that shouldn't stop you from being you.

Raatchasi (Madam Geeta Rani) (2019)

I randomly came upon this movie on tv. Raatchasi means Demoness in Tamil. It is a children's social drama film. It is about a headmistress who converts a poorly run school, into one of the best, admist fighting corrupt officials.

Guilty (2020)

This is a must watch movie. One of Kiara Advani's amazing work. Why are women always blamed and questioned for no fault of their own? Men can do something terrible and still be given the benefit of doubt. This movie is an eye-opener.

Bulbul (2020)

The only horror movie I enjoyed & admire. Bulbul is one of the few ladies I aspire to be. She was innocent, yet she became powerful, in such a poise manner. I wished there was more in the movie's present time, but the story was amazing, connecting folklore with justice.

Promising Young Woman (2020)

This is another must watch movie. One person alone cannot change the culture & mindset of people. We all have to do our part to unlearn & relearn things taught to us. Just because the accused is a so called "nice guy" or doesn't look like he could do something bad, doesn't mean he couldn't or wouldn't or isn't capable of doing something evil.
