No Damsel in Distress

Image
Since the past years, we have been blessed with many women-centric films, which were much long due. Whether it maybe a young woman discovering herself, or a mother seeking vengeance, these movies are an inspiration and representation that we needed. Below are some of my favourite movies which feature women in power. Jo March in 'Little Women' Kahaani (2012)  It's been a decade since this movie released. This movie had a plot twist that no one saw coming. Don't underestimate a woman on a mission, even if she's pregnant. Kahaani Movie Poster English Vinglish (2012)  Shashi is a small entrepreneur who makes delicious snacks. She flies to New York City to attend her niece’s wedding.  She enrolls in an English-speaking course, t o stop her husband Satish and daughter Sapna from mocking her lack of English skills.  Her attempt to learn the language helps her rediscover herself and reassert her value as a mother and a wife. Navratri

Image
Maa Shailaputri Navaratri is a Hindu festival that spans over nine nights (and ten days). The post-monsoon autumn festival called Sharada Navaratri, is observed in the honor of the divine feminine Devi Durga. The word Navaratri means 'nine nights' in Sanskrit, nava meaning nine and ratri meaning nights. Maa Brahmacharini ORIGINS The story associated with Navratri is the battle that occurred between Goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasura. Mahishasura had been granted immortality by Lord Brahma and had been told that he could only be defeated by a woman. He attacked Trilok (Earth, Heaven and Hell), and the Gods were not able to defeat him. Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva together created Goddess Durga, who finally defeated Mahishasura. She fought with him for 15 days, and the demon kept changing his form. Mahishasura would take various forms to confuse Goddess Durga.  Finally, when he turned into a buffalo, that is when Goddess Durga killed him with her trishul. It is ...

Nostalgic Bollywood Movies

Image
Movies of early 90's & 2000's made my childhood. From Prem to Rahul, from family to love, from love triangles to ek tarfa pyar. These movies are everything that yo u can sit and enjoy with your whole family, and have an amazing time. Here are some movies that will make you nostalgic, a rranged chronologically  : (The below contain spoliers) Hum Aapke Hain Kun (1994) The worst villian in Bollywood history - " the staircase" . We all were shocked and disheartened when we saw Pooja (Renuka Shahane) falling down the stairs. Prem (Salman Khan) and Nisha's (Madhuri Dixit) love story was almost going to end, but thanks to Tuffy (one of Bollywood's cutest pet), their love story was saved, and the movie had a happy ending. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) "Cheater! Cheater! Rahul is a cheater!" This movie had 2 Anjalis, 2 love triangles (years apart), Rahul and Prem together, the iconic SRK-Kajol Jodi, the Mukherjee sisters working together, an 8 year old match-...

Eco-Friendly Ganesh Murthis

Image
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as the birthday of the Hindu God Lord Ganesha.      Let's have a look at history of the Ganesh festival. Lord Ganesha is elephant headed God, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. One day Goddess Parvati was going to bathe but there was no one to guard her door. So she made an idol using sandalwood and gave life to it. She ordered the boy to guard the entrance and forbid anyone to enter. Sometime later, when Lord Shiva returned home, he met with the boy at entrance. They both didn't know each other. As following Parvati's command, the boy stopped Shiva from entering. Shiva tried a lot to convince the boy but he denied to let him in. Shiva felt insulted and got very angry. He ended up chopping the boy's head with his 'Trishul'. Parvati came out to see what had happened.       The moment she saw her son's head and body lying apart on the floor, she got furious. She was very heartbroken. She demanded to bring the boy ba...

Rakhi Ke Bandhan Ko Nibhana

Image
Did you know that 22nd August (2021) was observed as Coconut Day as well as Raksha Bandhan was celebrated. Let's take a look to know the speciality behind these festivals. Raksha Bandhan is a very popular festival, but did you know about the coastal celebration of Narali Pournima. NāraLi pournima is a ceremonial day observed by Hindu fishing communities in Maharashtra, particularly around Mumbai and the Konkan coast. It is held on the full-moon day of the Hindu month of Shravan which falls around July or August. The ocean was worshipped with rice, flowers and coconuts as offerings. Another ceremony involves women tying a rakhi or amulet on the wrists of their brothers. In Bombay, the festival formerly involved large numbers of people assembling at the beach between Malabar Hill and Colaba with coconuts and floral offerings being cast into the sea. It was celebrated towards the end of the monsoon and marked the beginning of calmer seas and safe sailing. Fun Fact : World Coconut Day...

Movies You Got To Watch

Image
I am a movie nerd. Since I was little, I loved watching movies. When I was in school, I knew everything about Bollywood. Which movie was releasing when, who starred in it, the actors, directors, producers, music composers, was the movie good or bad. I even memorised all the songs and learned the hook steps. I am so in awe with cinema. The music, the emotions, the filming. So much time, efforts and hard work to bring a magical story to life.  Like I said I have watched many films, but these are my top 5 movies you can't miss, especially if you are a cinephile. The Shape of Water (2017) Written by :  Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor Director :  Guillermo del Toro Starring : Sally Hawkins, Doug Jones This movie is magical. It even won the 90th Academy Award for Best Picture. Set in Baltimore in 1962, during the Cold War, is the love story of Elisa and The Amphibian Man. Despite coming from two different worlds, they understand each other, without speaking. Truly lo...

Movie Review : Chemical Hearts

Image
In today's blog, my dearest friend Sherlin, a new & upcoming blogger, is going to review Chemical Hearts. We both share a love for movies, and I'm excited to show you'll what she has in store for us. A movie with the ability to summon Niagara Falls from your eyes, is based on a novel by Krystal Sutherland titled 'Our Chemical Hearts' . It is that type of movie that will wreck your heart and keep you awake at night thinking about all your blunders. The plot surrounding, Henry Page (played by Austin Abrams) and Grace Town (played by Lili Reinhart), is an extremely raw story and it feels so real that it almost feels unedited, and is very impeccably portrayed. Lili literally slayed this movie. Her persona had such profundity and elegance. Whereas Austin precisely depicted a high school teenage kid, with a ton of time on his hands, can be elusive, he was so reasonable. But personally, the character of Henry was very flat and monotonous. The movie delves deeper into ...
